terrain generation

im trying to find a terrain generation tutorial in which you might generate random terrain and then store it into a 2D array or at least somthing like that. I know how to render the terrain and texture it but not generate the data. Right now im using a .raw file like the nehe tutorial used in its code, but what im looking to do is just generate it randomly within my program. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated, THANKS!
