Light in OGL

i am sure youve all seen how lightbulbs have an orb around them that gives off light and slowly dissapears as its diameter increases. How can i make something like this in OGL? I'd probably either a) surround it with a textured sphere with alpha blending or b) use a textured billboard to simulate the glow

There's a thread that was started in the DirectX forum a couple of days back discussing planetary environment glow, it seems to cover the same basic theory as this. You might want to check it out for ideas [grin]

AHA! I thought of your a) .. my buddy said it seemed unreal, but i guess it can be done! i'll check the thread out, thnx.

Looks like what you want to do is something like the "coronas" in UT2004.I have implemented those in my engine and they look good.Here I describe how they work,if you want take a look.
