16 bit greyscale png

I notice that Terragen can export its heightmaps to 16 bit raw files. And since, I am handling all my image loading with sdl_image, I think I would prefer to load in my heightmaps as 16 bit greyscale png's. I know how to load in 16 bit raw files, but I can't seem to find a way to save it to 16 bit greyscale png, even using libPNG (the documentation is really confusing). There don't seem to be any cases that deal with 16 bit greyscale, and most major image editing programs like photoshop don't seem to work with them. Does anybody know of any programs that might help me, or know how to do this in libPNG?
