CheckDeviceFormat + Render targets

I'm trying to determine if I'll be able to create textures which I then render to. That is, they're render targets, but created as textures. (DirectX 8.1). How do I call CheckDeviceFormat - with D3DRTYPE_SURFACE or D3DRTYPE_TEXTURE, and with or without the D3DUSAGE_RENDERTARGET flag? Or do I need to call it multiple times?

I use to check the texture format and surface target separately. For the texture I check the format, for the surface I use D3DUSAGE_RENDERTARGET, D3DRTYPE_SURFACE combination
