LPD3DXFONT-DrawText() problem

I have this problem with DrawText that if the RECT you specify goes outside the window to the left or top (right or bottom is fine) the text is horribly clipped. Here is a screenshot, in the bottom blue box the text rect is a bit outside the window to the left and thus causing parts of the text to disappear. http://img25.exs.cx/img25/5307/DrawTextError.jpg What could cause this? I'm using the flags DT_LEFT | DT_WORDBREAK | DT_NOPREFIX.
