A* For 3D Game

Hi, I have been working on an game for a shool project, so far I can only move units on an terrain with some models using the mouse. I have been thinking about to import some sort of A* system so the units go around stones and houses and cant go over deep water if you know what i meen. Im totaly new in Pathfinding so I need someone to explain how to do this, and maybe write me some example how to make the Nodes in 3D terrains space and the search think. Hope anyone can help me with this I will be very glad. thx.
