2D Sprites Character Animation

Hey How does Diablo and the like do it's character animation with multiple weapon types? Do they draw new images of the characters holding different weapons, with all the angles, or are the weapons seperate sprites. Thanks

I can't remember how but I think they rendered different regions of the body with different equipment instead of the a character for every possible combination of equips.

Sprite Parts, many many many 2d engines do that.
