glGetString(GL_RENDERER) returns (null)?

I'm trying to display the video card information in my logger with this code:
//! Display card info
logger->newMsg("Render: %s", (char)glGetString(GL_RENDERER)); //! Logger Message
logger->newMsg("Vendor: %s", (char)glGetString(GL_VENDOR)); //! Logger Message
logger->newMsg("Version: %s", (char)glGetString(GL_VERSION)); //! Logger Message

but this is what it shows in my log file: [00:35:54]: Render: (null) [00:35:54]: Vendor: (null) [00:35:54]: Version: (null) I know this is not a bug in my logger, I can display variables in my logger... any ideas?
