Maya preview pipeline in 9.0c

Has anyone seen any examples of code that loads and renders the new style Xfiles exported from Maya? The D3DXLoadMeshFromXof function [allegedly] can read in a list of .fx files used per subset, in the same way as you'd usually do with materials. And, DXUTMesh::Render() is overloaded to process effects, but I haven't seen anything that extracts the effects - every example I can find blanks the *ppEffectInstances in D3DXLoadMeshFromXof() with a NULL.
