Taking the step form a basic OpenGl scene to a simple car driving game

What is the best way to create a world, with trees, buildings, a sky, roads and such for a game? I have created a simple opengl engine and want to create a simple car driving game, but it all stops when i dont know how to create the tracks. I suppose I could model it in 3dStudio or something and use a 3dsLoader, but how do I interpret the objects? what is the road, what is a brick wall? Thanks -valium-
