Material systems

I'm working on a 3d engine and I'm at the point where I need to implement some sort of a material system. I want to make it very similar to Ogre's material system (I will write my own mesh filetype and every polygon will be assigned to a material file which has the texture/shader information in it). But I have no idea where to start! Eventualy I'm going to implment GLSlang(GLSL) into this material system, but not until I get the main structure coded. Do you guys know any good articles about material systems? (yes, I googled it but didn't find anything) Thanks

I don't know of any articles, but you might be able to find something at ATIs or NVIDIAs developer sites.
