OK, how do I use this function?

this is what I have:

LPDIRECTDRAW7 lpdd; //version 7.0 main
LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE7 DDback_sprite; //DX BACK surface
...
DDback_sprite = DDLoadBitmap(lpdd,"lvl2.bmp",0,0);


but nothing happens, the DDback_sprite surface is empty. What am I doing wrong?
