Realtime per-pixel lighting & shadowing

Hya again, I'm working on an indoors engine and I'd like to add some really nice-looking lighting and shadowing (this is why I'm thinking per-pixel). I'd also like to do at least some of this in real-time. I'd also like to be able to use a method that isn't limited to just 8 lights. I appreciate that the more lights I have the more intensive my lighting / shadowing will be. I'd also like to add specular lighting too (per-pixel again). At the moment I'm thinking that some of my lighting will have to be non-real-time but I can have some of it real-time as well. What scope in temrs of the number of light sources would a diffuse & specular pixel shader give me? How could I do accurate shadows too? I've been looking in to shadow mapping and shadow volumes amongst other things and I'm still searching the forum but I'm not really sure. Thanks for any help you can give me Matt
