How do I model + skeleton - openGL transforms on parts

We had an assignment where we use ArtOfIllusion to create a hand and add a skeleton. We then exported it as an *.obj file. Next, we are going to import it into openGL and use the keyboard to transform each part of the hand, but we found out that the skeleton isn't exporting with the file. Should we be exporting the model as a different type or should we be using a different model program ( maya )? At this point I'm lost. Our teacher is as lost as the students are and I would appreciate some help on this subject.
