Free 3D breakout game!!!! (ignore at your peril)
I just put a newer version of my openGL breakout game up on the my site. It's got loads of particle effects and powerups and sound effects and things. Download it here and tell me what you think.
If it runs slow or doesn't work, if you could post some details about your system up that would be appreciated, and I'll try and fix the problem in future versions.
Note: this program uses the stencil buffer for shadows and lighting, so if you're using a nVidia card you may have to switch your display to 32-bit. I don't know if this affects other card types.
Snippets of source are available on request (If I'm in a nice mood ).

Hey! Neat game!
Runs perfectly on my Athlon TB 800 w/ Voodoo 5
Neat graphics! (reflections are cool!)
I found a flaw though (I'd say it's one, anyway) - the ball doesn't rebound from the "thingy" (the, umm... the thing you move around...) corresponding to the laws of physics... as long as the ball hits a straight face it gets reflected in the same angle. I suggest you change this as the current behaviour makes aiming damn hard. Maybe you could round of the "thingy" at the ends - and let it rebound in different angles there?
Keep up the good work!
Oh and I beat the game first time round.

A very good game. I think you could actually make a buck or two on this if you released it as shareware once it''s finished.
One thing bothered me though. I would like the ball to roll instead of bounce around the play area. Maybe you could give it some bounce when it hits something and then let it slowly settle down into a roll again. I think that would be much better.
Very cool. I think I will actually play it at least one more time

Yeah the bouncing is kinda irritating...
By the way, I''m getting 37-60fps
And what do the funny blobs actually do except follow the ball around?

Thanks guys! I was beginning to wonder if anyone would look
That''s intentional. It''s copied from the original BBC B breakout game (I think it was the original anyway), and it''s put in so you can aim. Without that feature you wouldn''t be able to aim at all.
There''s a very good reason for that (besides your amazing hand-eye coordination ). I just noticed I''ve uploaded a version where you can''t actually die. It''s set like that for debugging. I''ll upload the other version when I have more time... and I''ll make it harder too .
Ball bouncing? well I like it
The blob things don''t do anything. They were going to do something (probably eat the ball or knock it out of the arena), but I lost interest in the project and started working on something else, and never went back to it.
BTW, does the sound work on all your machines?

I just uploaded a fixed version. Many bugs have been fixed, including crashing at the end. I also added a darker version of the game to the zip because the previous version looked too bright on some machines. Download it with the link above or here.

Hi,
I would like to play but I get about 0.2 frames per second... hehe. I have an old Matrox Millenium G200 AGP. I dont think it supports too many 3D accelerated functions - but it does do some.
anyway, just letting you know how the lower-end graphics cards handled it.

It probably doesn''t like the stencil buffer. Try switching your display to 32-bit - this works on some cards. Otherwise, try the old version.
