It seems on several of the pages of my new (not yet fully functional) web site, some of the text only displays if it's highlighted, and even then it's weird. For example, on this page you can see there's a gap in the navigation bar between "Music" and "Programs". That's where the plain text (not linked) "Quotes" should be, and you can see it if you highlight it, but not when it's not highlighted. What could be wrong? Here's the CSS if it's of any help:
html, body {
	margin: 0px 10% 2%;
	padding: 0;
	background-color: #fff;
	color: #000;
	}

a:link, a:visited {
	color: #999;
text-decoration: none;
                  }

a:hover, a:active {
	color: #000;
	text-decoration: none;
                  }

#logo {
	width: 150px;
	float: left;
	margin-left: -1px;
	margin-right: 0 px;
        padding: 0px;
      }

#side {
	color: #000;
	width: 150px;
	float: left;
	margin-left: -1px;
	padding: 10px;
	font: 14px arial;
      }

#content {
	color: #000;
	background-color: #fff;
	padding: 10px;
	margin-left: 160px;
	border-left: 5px solid #008000;
	}

#header {
	background-color: #fff;
	color: #666;
        margin-top: 10px;

	font: 50px arial;
	border-bottom: 5px solid #008000;
	}

#quote  {
	float: left down;
	margin-left: 10px;
	padding: 10px;
	font: 10px arial italic;
	border-bottom: 5px solid #008000;
	text-align: right;
	}

#footer {
	background-color: #fff;
	color: #999;
	border-top: 5px solid #008000;
	text-align: right;
	padding: 2px 10px 0 0;
	clear: both;
	font: 11px times;
	}

.spacer {
	clear: both;
	}

p {padding: 0;
   margin-top: 0px;
	}

I would first try applying a color to the <p > tags. I would also extend the abbreviated #000 to its full length, but that's just me. If that doesn't work, try the W3C validator. You'd probably want to do that even if it does work, though.

You defined colors for the body tag but the document doesn't contain a body section (<body> </body>). Get a book on HTML and learn the basics.

He doesn't need a book, he can probably learn enough to get started from w3schools. Adding body tags should get rid of the invisible "quotes". He might be able to get away with changing the color for the p tag, but the body tags need to be included for well formed html.
