Hey all, I'm getting into network programming and I'm starting by making some very very simple programs. I'm in an apartment with high speed internet access. I have WindowsXP, one roomate has MacOSX, and the other runs Linux. We all share the internet through a wireless router. It seems that when we all go to 'whatismyip.com' we all have the same ip address. I mention the above because I think it is the cause of my problem, which I don't know how to resolve. I can run my programs on my own computer (I'm using Winsock2 btw) by specifying the IP address as 127.0.0.1, but when I try to set it to that ip I get from 'whatismyip.com' My programs don't work! I want to be able to have people from the internet connect to a server I make on my computer, and I am at a loss. For extra info... when I set the ip to bind my socket to as the 'whatismyip.com' ip, it says I can't bind the socket :( Does anyone have any insight into this situation? Thanks! -Sean

your wireless router is a NAT router.

the word NAT should be all you need to google the brains out of your problem. many solutions exist.

one such solution is to configure the router to forward some ports to your machine.

I'm no export but,
You have to setup the router to forward a specific port to the IP it assigns your computer, or put your computer in the DMZ on the router.

You'll understand more in search for NAT on google.
