32-bit color shifting

Hi! I want to be able to change the color of my sprites according to the player owning them. E.g. Player 1 yellow, Player 2 light blue, Player 3 dark blue and so on. I want to use 32-bit color depth. Now I am wondering if there exists an algorithm for dividing the available colors according to the (arbitary) amount of players and for the color shifting. Currently I am using 8-bit palettes, but I want to get rid of them. Does anybody know something about this (articles, links...) Thx
