Is DirectX 8.0 considered a c++ compiler? Or will it do things of that nature? I'm purchasing a book that comes with it (programming role-playing games with directx) and was wondering if it was. Thanks!

DirectX is an interface that can be used to access the hardware of the computer. ie: Direct3D is used to access the graphics card, DirectInput the input device(s) and DirectAudio the audio device. Through DIrectX, you can manipulate the hardware to do your bidding. A compiler on the other hand is just a program that takes anything you've written in some specific language, and turns it into an executable that can be run.

this may help explain things a bit.

You *do* realize that there exists a forum specifically for "total n00b questions"? Hint, the gdnet staff were nice enough to make it first in the list so it would be easy to find.
