Device losses during offscreen rendering

Yes, it's possible.

Lost devices are typically caused during an Alt-Tab between a fullscreen exclusive application and the desktop.

When this happens between different screen modes (e.g. 640x480x16 game to 1024x768x16 desktop), many drivers flush *all* resources from video memory and rebuild their internal maps of what's in that memory.

This means all render target surfaces, back buffer, primary surface, video memory textures and video memory VBs/IBs can potentially be lost/flushed, resulting in a lost device.
