The Doom 3 Mod Foundry website has been launched. Frustrated by the inefficiencies found in traditional, closed-system modification development, the Doom 3 Mod Foundry is an attempt to introduce and reinforce the usage of open source software development paradigms to the rapidly growing game modification domain. In the development patterns currently exhibited by the great majority of game modifications, personal specialization by developers is stifled, leading to sizeable losses in efficiency, quality, and innovation. It is not rare for a developer whose aptitudes lie in programming to be forced to learn how to model, map, and texture just to keep a project alive. The limited knowledge gained by the developer in each area does not compare to the efficacy of specialization in software development. The Doom 3 Mod Foundry serves as a meeting place and resource for individuals who are interested in developing Doom 3 modifications through the use of open source methods. With time and support from the community, we at the Mod Foundry hope to demonstrate the applicability of open source paradigms in the modification domain while developing some of the most entertaining and innovative mods for the Doom 3 engine.
