gluCylinder texture mapping

I''m not sure if this can be done or not, not having any luck so far anyway, but can you texture map a gluCylinder and have it use the Alpha value for transparency? To better put it, I can already map a texture to the gluCylinder object and have it actually use the alpha value but I cannot see through the Cylinder, the areas that I want transparent are completley black. But I can map the same texture and use the same blen func''s and such to a quad and I am able to see through the quad. Is there another way to accomplish what I want or are Quadrics impossible to see through? Thanks, Jim
