Most indie projects fail, especially ones without a) a complete team b) actual leadership c) realistic goals d) maturity
If you get involved in a project with other people over the internet, just assume from the start that it's not going to meet its goals. Although if you're mature enough to handle it... it's probably a good experience to work with people who are incompetent, assuming you're not.
