I've been creating an input system using sdl for my engine, and when i tryed to add joystick support, sdl returns 0 joysticks, but i have a usb saitek cyborg evo attached, it works fine in battlefield 1942, ms flight sim, combat sim, and tons of other games, and its installed under my game devices as a joystick, so why would sdl not detect it?

im not sure but maybe sdl looks to see if you have a serial game port and doesnt bother looking in the usb ports.

I currently have the same problem. I have a Logitech Wingman Extreme Gamepad and SDL won't recognize it, but I'm pretty sure that nothing is wrong because on my old machine I used it to play emulated games via SNES9x, which I believe uses SDL (not sure). The gamepad can be plugging into either a game serial port (like on my SB Live!) or USB and neither have worked. I want to figure this problem out but I currently have too much work to do to bother with it. I'll post if I figure out how to get SDL to recognize it, and I hope you'll do the same if you figure out before I do. :)

i did, i did everything correctly, i tested with an older 2 button, 1 axis serial port joystick, and it worked just fine, and that joystick i didnt even install and it wasnt under my game devices, so im not sure if sdl is too outdated (my joystick is relavtively new), and i wasnt sure if sdl detected usb devices or primarily serial
