It might be just me, but it's not entirely clear which exe file to use. Is the first the data with an old exe or a new exe? In other words: do I need them both?

/edit
Took the exe, now it works. Very nice game, good UI, nice simple (retro) graphics, I like it. Can't wait for the orks :)

Just one thing, you might want to add some other grass tiles, this way it gives a very strange effect when walking.

Sorry about the confusion. The first, u1.zip, is the entire package, data and executable. The second, u1exe.zip, is just the executable.

I posted links to both in case some people don't bother reading the entire thread. If you've already got the package, then by all means just dl the executable.

Wow, it worked! Thanks for the comments.

In light of the fact that it appears to be working for WinXP now, here are some updated links without all the extra logging:

Complete package: http://www.ninquenor.com/files/u1-002.zip

Just the exe: http://www.ninquenor.com/files/u1exe002.zip

I'll replace the original files (so the old links above get the newer files) after some other people have verified that it works for them too.

Heh. The original Ultima only had 1 grass tile. I know what you mean. You can't tell you're moving unless you've got some other types of tiles on the screen for reference. Same thing happens when you're at sea.

Thanks again, and take care.
The above post is from me. Duh.

EDIT: Links didn't work in my anonymous post. Argh.

huzza! it worked fine for me. just a bit slow on starting caused a little confusion but then it was fine.

EDIT: Oh, and yeah, it's s'posed to exit gracefully. If you check the log you should find a line like this:

CGameApp::Startup(1024,768,00648C98)

Where 1024 and 768 are your screen resolution.

Then towards the bottom you should see this line:

CWindow::Destroy():Exiting fullscreen mode and restoring 1024x768x32 bits

Of course if that's not there then there's nothing graceful about the exit. Heh. The game runs in 640x480x32.

CWindow::Destroy():Exiting fullscreen mode and restoring 1280x960x32 bits
That's all fine and dandy, however, it does not restore my refresh rate. No matter whether I exit it normally or if it crashes, I am always back at 60 hz which really hurts my eyes. :(
works fine here:
windowsxp pro
geforce fx 5200 ultra 128
512mb ddr400 pc3200 ram
amd athlon xp 1800+
Very nice! Worked well here, no issues. Got into character creation and the map, both.

Windows XP Pro
nVidia 5700
1.5Gb of RAM
DirectX 9.0c

The only comment I would make is that the moon cursor that spins is... extremely fast. And disorienting. :)

Good show.
..what we do will echo throughout eternity..
sweetness.
winxp
geforce 5500fx
athlon 64
1.0 gb ram
dx 9c
quality scrolling effects.
cheers.
