I want to create a compression algorithm to use in my games. I don't really need any actual code, I just want to see some theory, or maybe a compression algorithm that you've created. What are some common ways to accomplish this, and what type of data would a header need to contain?

Well, you can do what's called run-length encoding, huffman coding(probably most applicable and best all-around), or delta(differential) encoding.

I've applied all three, so if you need further info, I can post in much greater depth if necessary!

What kind of data are you compressing? That can be relevant to your choice of compression algorithm.

I want it to be used to compile any file, but most would probably be text files. I'm going with huffman right now, because it seems like it would compress the most after reading about the other types.
