What settings do I have to change in VC++ to use DX 9? I already added the lib and include directories and changed to run-time libraries to Multi-Threaded DLL. I'm getting very frustrated! I also tried adding the line: #pragma comment(lib, "d3d9.lib") but I get the error: C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT DIRECTX 9.0 SDK (SUMMER 2004)\LIB\d3d9.lib : warning LNK4003: invalid library format; library ignored C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT DIRECTX 9.0 SDK (SUMMER 2004)\LIB\d3d9.lib : warning LNK4003: invalid library format; library ignored winmain.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _Direct3DCreate9@4 Debug/example2.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals Error executing link.exe. If I add d3d9.lib to the project, I get the error: ..\..\..\Microsoft DirectX 9.0 SDK (Summer 2004)\Lib\d3d9.lib : fatal error LNK1136: invalid or corrupt file Error executing link.exe.

Either your version of MSVC is too old, or your D3D SDK was corrupted. My guess is the former.

You can download the latest visual C++ compiler, libraries, and linker (but not the debugger/IDE) here for free.

Probably not, no (since the compiler options are much different). What version are you using right now?
