Vertex Shader for Character Animation?

OK, I've gotten my bone and mesh information expered in a form that I can use in my engine, now I need to actually do the animation. I have read a number of references to using Vertex Shaders to actually do the animation. are there any good tutorials/overviews of the theory/practice? Is this currently considered "the way to go"? Is there a better alternative? I'm new to character animation, so be gentle. :-) Thanks as always for the help! Onnel
