Unit Placement Offset

okay, many of us have done game scripting or functions that need units to suddenly be placed at an x/y (possibly Z) location. Placing a unit is easy, when there's nothing at the location. What I am having logic problems with, is handelling a case that if someone places a unit programattically, it'll be put as close to the target as possible without being inside other eitities. All entities have a bounding circle, and only the x/y coordinates matter in this case. Can someone help me with this logic?
