Default z value when no camera is specified

If I set the screen resolution to say, 1024 x 768 and render a triangle, at what value of z will the triangle appear to clip into the screen? To clarify, if I try to render a triangle with 0 > x > 1024 or 0 > y > 768 the triangle appears to go off the screen. I'm wondering at what value of z for a vertex of aa triangle it would appear to come into and past the screen.
