Hello all, I am interested in designing an MMPOG, but I need to know what I need. I am an independant game developer right now, so I dont need a team. (please dont comment on that) Now, I need to know exactly what all is needed, and I hope you guys can help out, (software wise), please try to keep the stuff free.

No offense, but the fact that you're asking this question suggests that you really shouldn't even be thinking about trying to develop a MMORPG just yet.

The tools you need depend on the requirements of your project. If it's just a text based MUD style thing, then you don't need much more than a compiler and a few machines to test the networking code on. Dev C++ is generally recommended as free compiler, although I've never used it myself.

If it's a full blown Everquest style MMORPG then you may want to set your sights a little lower, at least to begin with.

You're designing one? Oh, fine. You'll want Notepad, for writing stuff. And probably Windows Paint, too, for some concept art. Those should be all you need.
