Horrible texture problems

After tying SDL_LoadBMP, Nehe's TGA tutorial and libpng I still cant load a texture without my program dying almost silently. I get an invalid page fault and it just stops. Anyone else had this problem and/or knows how to fix it?

well my last GL program used really disorganised plain C and the awful GLaux library to load textures, but its only since the C++ class-based rewrite that I've had the problem. The old program still works fine.
