I can't figure out clipping in ddraw7

I've done an animation in c++ and it runs okay until I try to do clipping, in which case it displays a blank screen. Of course, without the clipping it runs but not very smoothly. My direct draw object is lpdirectdraw7 and that's incompatible with explainations I've seen to do clipping. I really want to figure this out but I feel kind of lost after trying everything I could think of. Basically all the direct draw initializing in my code works, and the bitmaps that were within bounds of the screen displayed and animated okay. I don't want to go back and rewrite all my code from lpdirectdraw7 to lpdirectdraw.
