Shadow volumes in my engine

Hi, I made a shadow volume demo a while ago, now I want shadows in my engine and I have a few questions. Firstly as the level geometry won't be a closed mesh, will flagging un-connected edges as always extruded while making the connectivity map work to fix that problem? Secondly how should I combine multiple light sources? How efficient is deffered shading? And will there be any significant problems mixing shadows from models and the level at the same time? Cheers.
