Can I Use Half Life Map Files? The Best Way?
I posted in another thread about level, worlds, maps, etc. Basically, I'm at a point where I want to represent my world in my game (let's say a 3D FPS for now). I started to think that it might be a good idea to use something already mature for my levels.
Can I legally and practically use Valve's Hammer Editor (or some comparable tool) to build my levels and read them into my game? Do these only work with Half Life mods? Is the file format open and available? Is it brutally complex?
I only learned of these tools a couple of days ago, so any information you can offer would almost certainly help.
I don't think you are allowed to use the output from those programs. But I'm not sure. However.
There is a program called Cartography Shop for sale, or if you want to start with a freebie one, check out Delgine.com and get Deled. It's still very early but it's very usable and has an easy to parse file format.
In the next few weeks, lightmapping will be implemented into it.
