2d polygon terrain

i'm still confused as to how to handle dynamic objects in a scene. ok, i have a side-on scrolling terrain made of polys, its all inside a kind of AABB tree (worked out offline). at the minute, my dynamic objects are not part of this structure and are just "floating about" on their own, querying the AABB tree for collisions. i was wondering if its worth putting these objects in the same tree as the terrain or maybe creating some other kind of spatial structure for them to inhabit. does any of this make sense?
