Getting the 2D orientation from an ODE orientation matrix

I am using the ODE physics engine which supplies a rotation matrix or quaternion that represents the body's orientation. For some AI calculations I need to get the 2D orientation (on the XZ axis) of a body. (ie, an angle between positive and negative 180 degrees). Does anyone know a way to do this with or without using ODE?
