Okay, I'm in the process of writing a game engine (I know, I know, everyone who has ever programmed in C++ says at one time or another that they're writing a game engine, but I don't expect it to fully work. Its just for learning.) and I've written a memory manager for objects, a log class to log debug messages and such, and a file manager to handle the loading and dealing with files. So, what's next? Should I start working with directX or opengl for 3d graphics, or do people think that there are more important base things that I should be working on next?

I would go with sound next(with SDL_Mixer), just because that's easier. When you do work on the 3D part, I recommend SDL+OpenGL, it's easy and crossplatform

Yes, using OpenGl WITH SDL is SOOOOO much easier that doing it with the windows API. It's just as fast too (way faster than using GLUT).
