pointer to structs problem

i'm trying to implement a tree thingy. i'm not sure i declare it good though, because right now it gives me "request for member left_child (/ right child) in something not a structure" error. what am i doing wrong?
struct node 
		char op;
		int key;
		char node_mode;
                struct node *left_child, *right_child;

int DLR_scan (struct node *root)
    if (root == NULL) return;
    //... do stuff
    DLR_scan (root.left_child);  //  <- error in this line/
    DLR_scan (root.right_child);
