redundant materials when loading x file!

hi all, About D3DXLoadMeshFromX Function:
HRESULT WINAPI D3DXLoadMeshFromX( LPCTSTR pFilename, DWORD Options, LPDIRECT3DDEVICE9 pD3DDevice, LPD3DXBUFFER *ppAdjacency, LPD3DXBUFFER *ppMaterials, LPD3DXBUFFER *ppEffectInstances, DWORD *pNumMaterials, LPD3DXMESH *ppMesh );
When loading my mesh, I found that: NumMaterials is a wrong number ! My mesh has only 3 subset (0,6,7) but NumMaterials = 8. SO I have to load some redundant materials (or textures). How to fix this error? (or is this an error ?) THANKS
