OpenGL with Flash????

Has anyone heard of OpenGL working with Flash? I have heard that flast does have limited 3D capabilities but I haven''t seen any webpages that take advantage of it. Is there anyway to bring in OpenGL into webpages? -Cecil

No, Flash doesn't support 3D and there's no OGL support.
You can make fake 3D with Flash but it isn't worth it.

If you want 3D in a webpage you could try this.
This is a new thing on the net called "web3D"
There are more 3D players out there but I can't give you more links for them (I forgot them )

One nasty thing about the player(s) above is that it requires a plugin.
Most users won't like that. (too big, no time, etc)

BUT there's another option: JAVA!

With JAVA you can make 3D in a webpage (with OGL ) without requiring the user to download a plugin. (= more people looking @ your page )

You can download a free JAVA IDE+compiler for windows/linux @ www.borland.com
One note left: if you download this IDE you should have much RAM in your pc (min. 128 MB) because it's written with JAVA.

btw. Just make a HTML page and not al that other nice stuff.
It takes too long to d'load and people won't wait for it.

You can make 3D animations with flash - just not OpenGL. If your serious about it, look into Vecta 3D, or the Vecta 3D plugin for 3D studio max.

you can try what i''m gonna try. since the 3d in flash looks crappy (cartoony), i''m planning to render my output from 3dsmax to a quicktime movie and import it into flash. i''m not sure if this will truly work yet, but i''ll get back to anyone that wants to know.

eck. actually, i wanted to use flash''s ability as a NON-web animator. there''s an sdk available that allows using flash files in c++. but, if you were to run it on the web, the way i''m doing it would be really slow.

the way to do it though is render your animation to a quicktime mov file, and then import into flash. the rest, i''m not sure, cuz i''ve never gotten past that point.

On a more bitchy note to the original poster here most of us are still on Dial-Up, although OpenGL online through the web is a sweet ass idea Java consoles still take forever to load up even on the most badass computers. Pulse creator takes a long time too but it''s slow, maybe you might want to look into Nemo Content Creator over at http://www.nemo.com (I think that''s it)
it''s great and the plugin is only about 100k plus it supports both OGL and D3D.

If you have a fast pc it isn''t slow.
If you have a 56k dial-up on a fast pc it is slow.
(but I''m getting something faster, hehe )

Hmmmm what if I created a Web Plugin for OpenGL? How big of an undertaking do you think that would be?

well, to keep this thread at the top, and to offer my opinion, i still think VRML is the best way to do 3D on the web. i''m not too sure if you want to undertake an OpenGL web plugin. i would imagine this would involve some java, which, like sinistrx pointed ou, already too slow.

VRML allows much of the functionality that most would desire out of 3D on the web anyway. you can assign events to certain 3D objects, integrate sound, trigger animation from events, etc etc, and it even does the collision detection for you! which i thought was pretty damn impressive.

however, if anyone out there still thinks there''s a better idea, by all means... i''d like to know too.

I have been thinking about an OpenGL plugin for the past few days, and I really think I should work on creating a plugin of sorts that supports OpenGL for the web.

If Java takes too long to load up, then there must be something else to code it in besides Java. What I was thinking of doing was creating an external program, like RealPlayer or Flash, that once downloaded to the hard drive, all the browser does is simply call it up, and the downloaded program takes care of all of the rest.

Is this a feasable solution?

hmmmm.. maybe. what host program were you going to use if not java? i would think c++ would be sort of hard because the networking functions aren''t quite as robust(?) as java.

also, are you planning to make this interactive? if so, then it might be worth doing... i would have no idea how to do this without java. it sounds like a lot to create a flash/opengl player. however, there are new programs that are beginning to support 3d for flash. (i think there was a review on www.flashplanet.com).

I was thinking of writing the engine itself in C++, and having poeple export their own models in .3ds form. Do you think this would be unconventially slow if I made the engine as an .exe file, have people download it, then have their browser run it?
