OpenAL is an audio library. It's different than OpenGL, which is a graphics library.

DirectMusic, DirectSound & fmod are libraries like OpenAL. There's tons of Audio libraries for C++ and like graphic libraries, there are no 'perfect' ones.

OpenAL is, specifically, an audio library intended for 3D environments. That means it modifies sounds based on where in the game world their origin is, what velocity they're moving at, etc.

There's also OpenIL which is like DirectInput from DirectX to accept keyboard, mouse, and joystick input. Wonder how many more are out. Is there one like DirectPlay for online games?
