Changing the color of a display list

I've just started programming some basic opengl stuff, got some lights working a a display list. I was wondering if it is possible to change the color of the display list after it has been called?
The portion of code inside the display list cannot be changed.
Yet you can set a different color before calling the list
(I think NeHe's Tutorial about display lists does exactly this thing)
