Hi, I have been reading quite a bit recently about using wavelets to compress data (more precisely in my case polygons), but i sometimes fail to completely understand the mathematical issues. Could you someone give an headstart in simple language on a moderately advanced system ( I understand the 1D example, and now trying to move more complex parts) Thank you by advance Emily

Exactly what issues you don't understand? This might not be what you need but in case you're going to implement wavelet based compression algo I propose that you look for multirate filters and dyadic (or constant-Q) tree filter structure which are often used to implement wavelets efficiently.
