Shader confusion

I'm quite new to this shader business, and I'm trying to get to grips with it. I have some queries in this regard: 1) Lets say I have two objects in a scene, both having two different shader materials on them (I'm using DirectX 9 btw). Also, I have a shader that does shadow mapping. Now, as I understand, first I run the shadow shader to generate the shadows for the objects on the scene. Then I render the objects with the shadow map applied. However, it seems that I can't render the objects with their attached material effects. In other words, I want to know how can I have shadow effects and other effects running simultaneously? Or am I limited to using shadow effects specifically for some objects (which won't have any other attached shader material) and not for others that have other effects attached? I hope I have managed to get my query across.
