OpenGL Converting existing 3D models into vertices/triangles so I can draw them w/ OpenGL

I'm working on making a 3D game using C++ and OpenGL. I would like to use some free 3d models that I have found on the web. Most of them are in 3ds format, I believe. I want to know how I can convert these models into a list of vertices of traingles or quads so that I can then draw them in OpenGL. Or is there a way, in OpenGL, to just display the models in their original format? I do not have 3D Studio Max or any other 3D modeling software. I'd appreciate it a lot if somebody could help me out. I'm doing this for a project for a college class, so a fast reply would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
