There are a few free modeling packages availiable...
If you can get hold of a modeling package like Lightwave or 3d Studio Max they would probably be your best bet, Otherwise something like Milkshape or Blender...

That depends if your game opens .obj files ;)
You could write code to open the model type your using, or you could export the models you create to a format you can open. Either or.

Translate to where the piece is located on the board
Rotate in the direction the piece is facing
Render the model
is that what your asking :|

Also consider http://www.ac3d.org its quite good.
If your new to these types of file formats consider an ascii modeller format to make it easier.
As for placing the pieces to the screen just use the size of a square as an offset for moving the piece, its quite straightforward.
The graphics are the easy part, the AI is the only tough part of a chess game.
no need to convert to .obj but .obj file format is really easy to use. there is a tut about using obj files @gametutorials.com you may want to animate the pieces( i know it is not necesserry but differs the game ;) ), so use something like md2. these are common formats. you can easily use them. (but it is a bit nesty(?) to convert a model to md2)
note: if you use obj you will not have to make a skin for pieces. use .mat file which is creating with obj. because in chess there is only two colors(b/w) :D
you should know simple transformation calculations to render the pieces to their own location @chess table or move them...
sorry for bad english. :(

Hi There,
If you are making a 3D chess game, you will need some sort of a 3D package to create the models. You can even go wild on the polygon count with these cause they are going to be the same models for each side and there are not going to be any special effects so you have plenty of raw power on most cards.
I made a chess set at one point, i used real chess to creat models. They were made using nurbs which of course is not suited for games. But those can be easily tranformed into polygons.
Hope this helps

Thank you very much for giving me opinion and suggestion
I will try to use 3D max to draw the chess pieces...
Does anyone have 3D chess source code? Can share? ^o^
I downloaded the "GL chess" in the Nehe Download section, but there is no source code inside the folder..
I really hope that someone can share the source code :)
Thanks...
you may find some at sourceforge, planet sourcecode. there are some apis to make the ai part. search at google for them if you use ai api, you will just need to make the graphics part.
and make a forum search. you will find lots of questions about chess prog.

The planet sourcecode has many chess source code but not the 3D chess source code ;). It is a good website.. thanks a lot 'Stroma'...
Stroma, have you developed a 3D chess after referring the source code from the website? ;) I hope someone here can share his/her 3D chess source code...

making them 3d is not the real problem if you can use their ai part.
i was developing a simple one, but like the %80 of computer related projects, it did not finished too.(lazy me) i have made the graphics and movements part but could not use(entegred) the ai apis, because i didnt want to read the papers to set the system. :D (because, as you see my english is not very well) so i did not work for it a lot, it was just a project for fun and to have knowledge. i just render a tile table with codes and put the *.3ds pieces on it.
and sorry i do lots of projects like this (everyday i want to make different thing :D ) and i only archive the finished and the good ones. i will search my arcihves, maybe some files are still around there. if i find some, i will post them to your mail account.
cheers
