creating a simple shadow

Hi, I'm trying to find the best way to create a simple shadow of my character. That's somthing like a round dark disc under his foot. I think the fastest way is to just draw a quad with some blending texture shaped like a disc, but it doesn't addapt to the unflat surface. I know shadow volume can do this, but I don't want to use the stencil buffer if I don't have to. Shadow map can help but that need shader supoort otherwise it's very slow. Are there any other tricks around? Thanks zzz

You could try decal texturing (like bullet holes in a wall). The simplest method will not conform to a shape, only a plane. There are more advaced versions to handle that.
