LOD reduction for models.

Is there any level of detail reduction algorithm, which could fit for any model? My app loads 3DS models, but some models have a quite big triangle count, so I want them to become more simpler when they get far away. Anything that could help me? Thanks in advance!

make reduction manually from editor and save it like model_low.3ds and take distance to object (do not have to make sphere distance, use box so you will not use slow sqrt funtion ) in you app, if it is far away then render the low-poly one... if not render high poly model. basic huh? [smile] there are another algoritms but i use that one, simple and clear.
i do not suggest making reduction automaticly...
