The z-buffer is logarithmic, rather than linear, which means the majority of the precision is around the near plane. Thats usually a good thing, because thats where you need the accuracy. The downside being that if you set the near plane too near (as you originally did) then all your precision is 'wasted' because you don't actually have any geometry in that area.
Long story short, near plane matters much more than far, so it should always be as far out as possible.
